Welcome back to another edition of Tuesdays at Quark’s, with another guest star from Star Trek: The Next Generation. This time we’re bringing in that nosey foil from Starfleet Command who pulled rank on both the crew of the Enterprise-D and the crew of Deep Space Nine. Give Admiral Nechayev a chance to pull rank on your crew too!
There are two ways to consider Admiral Nechayev. On the one hand she’s a mediating influence to check headstrong captains who want to mess up important negotiations with their limited understanding of the situations. On the other hand, she has a mile-high view that can miss subtleties of how events are actually playing out and she seems to have very little interest in understanding those subtleties. This puts her in the nice position of being an easy ally for your crew and an easy antagonist from within Starfleet. She can also switch back and forth several times throughout the same mission!
There are lots of plot hooks to try out with Admiral Nechayev but here are a few to get you started.
- Scientific discoveries in the Shackleton Expanse have caused Starfleet Command to send a flag officer to Narendra Station. The Player Characters’ ship has made a lot of interesting discoveries and is researching strange artifacts but the brass back on Earth think this should be handled closer to home. They send Admiral Nechayev to collect up the crew’s findings and give them a small pat on the back. Will they accept this and move on or try to negotiate for more involvement?
- Following the events of “The Abandoned,” the crew is Admiral Nechayev at the Cardassian border to negotiate better relations with the Cardassians. It’s a difficult sell, not just because matters with the Bajoran Wormhole and around the Badlands have soured matters but also because the Cardassians have a great offer from the Dominion. Can the crew help the admiral avert war or are they flying into a cunningly-assembled trap?
- Scandal! Starfleet is rocked by news that Admiral Alynna Nechayev has been accepting bribes from representatives in the Romulan Star Empire. She is nearby in a runabout when the news breaks and approaches the characters’ ship because of its reputation as a fine and honorable vessel. She maintains that she is being framed to take her out of diplomatic efforts in the Alpha Quadrant, though whether the culprits are the Cardassians, the Dominion, or even the Klingons is something yet to be discovered.
