Ten Forward Fridays: Coridans

Welcome to Ten Forward Fridays, where a new playable species is presented for the Star Trek Adventures roleplaying game, filling in some gaps until official material can be released.

Articles in March have been focusing on species from Star Trek: Enterprise. This week is the Coridans.

The planet of Coridan and its inhabitants were mentioned in The Original Series episode 2×15 Journey to Babel, which focused on the admittance of that planet into the Federation. The species, which is also known as Coridanites, appears twice in Star Trek Enterprise 1×15 and 4×20 However, in this second episode the species looks completely different, being reptilian with yellow eyes and a metallic mask. This production mistake is explained by saying that in diplomatic situations, Coridanites wear elaborate masks. (A second species would have worked as well, but “mask” is the official justification.)

There’s not a lot of personality to the Coridans, apart from some terrorists/ rebels. They’re pretty much just generic bumpy headed aliens that exist to reinforce Vulcans in the 22nd Century were kinda dicks. They did appear to have a some advanced technology, perhaps owing as much to trading with other species for centuries. But even then, they must have had skilled engineers and scientists.

    1. For some reason, my brain rejected learning the name “Coridan”. Whenever I went to look up the planet & people to jot notes and brainstorm it always took me three or four attempts to find. No matter how often I typed it, it was never retained.
I often ended up Googling “Shadows of P’Jem” to check the name. Because that somehow was easier to remember…
