Ten Forward Friday: Vorta

Welcome to Ten Forward Fridays, where a new playable species is presented for the Star Trek Adventures roleplaying game, filling in some gaps until official material can be released.

April is Dominion Month for this series. This week is the manipulative and scheming Vorta.

The social face of the Dominion, the Vorta are the bureaucracy of the Empire. Their attitude and behaviour resembles a corporate middle manager: all smiles and platitudes but ready to backstab at a moments notice. Like the Jem’Hadar, Vorta are programmed to see the Founders as gods. However, Vorta were a little more self serving the Jem’Hadar, and while they were expected to commit suicide as the result of failure, some were willing to surrender in order to stay alive, or consider alternate ways of serving their god.

In a Starfleet campaign, a Vorta might be a cultural ambassador working with the Federation, or a defector trying to stay alive. It’s also possible to play a defective clone, one who is more moral or just motivated by personal survival, who fled to the Federation. As Vorta are a cloned species, an unactivated clone could also have been found and awoken by Starfleet.

Unlike the Jem’Hadar, there are male and female Vorta, so it’s possible there might be natural born Vorta who are unassociated with the Dominion. It’s uncertain how the genetic conditioning might hold up over natural births and random selection.
