Subspace Kraken by William Parker

I mentioned the Subspace Kraken in my previous post about space weather, so I figured now would be the perfect time to share my creation with the world!

The Subspace Kraken was born from my itch to incorporate the classic TTRPG trope of venturing out to sea to battle a massive, violent monster—but with a science fiction and Star Trek twist. However, if you’re clever, you won’t need to fight it at all. I once ran an entire adventure based on chasing rumors of a “creature” that was sinking ships, with the players trying to clear the space lanes.

The Subspace Kraken is a ship-scale cosmozooan, a lifeform native to subspace that can reach into normal space to grab objects, smash them apart, and drag the remains below. When it does this, it generates small subspace vortexes where its body crosses over. Generally hostile and territorial, it attacks anything with a subspace component or antimatter—its main food source. While possessing only animal-like intelligence, it does have a powerful but primitive psionic presence.

When lurking beneath subspace, the Kraken passively creates subspace distortions and eddies that make maintaining warp speed difficult. It can also manipulate this effect more actively and aggressively in combat. During a fight, it often remains partially submerged in subspace, using its tentacles to strike from multiple angles, surrounding its target. Due to its nature as a subspace entity, the geometry of its body and tentacles doesn’t always make sense. However, it can fully emerge into normal space and travel at sublight speeds. Warp-speed travel, however, requires at least most of its mass to remain within subspace.

Interestingly, Subspace Krakens have been observed caring for their young. They nest in temporary stellar-mass black holes, which they bend out of subspace to keep their offspring safe. As subspace creatures, they can freely travel in and out of these black holes by “swimming” through subspace. Krakens are especially aggressive when protecting their young, but as long as ships keep their distance, everyone survives. Once the young grow to approximately Scale 3, the adult Kraken reverts the black hole back to normal space.

Much about this species remains unknown. How do they mate? How large can they grow? Where and when did they evolve? So many mysteries await any crew brave enough to seek the answers.

Perhaps your crew is assigned to study one of these creatures. Maybe they must clear a Kraken from a critical space lane before it’s too late! Or, if you’re feeling particularly devious, a Kraken could serve as a powerful motivation for players to leave a system immediately. Alternatively, it might be drawn to the spilled antimatter after a fierce space battle, complicating any plans for escape.

Of course, encountering a Subspace Kraken isn’t just about lore—it’s about survival. So what happens when your ship gets caught in its grasp? Let’s take a look at the stats and see what makes this creature a force to be reckoned with…
