Welcome to Ten Forward Fridays, where a new playable species is presented for the Star Trek Adventures roleplaying game, filling in some gaps until official material can be released.
This month is Dominion Month as a I detail some of the hostile races from the Gamma Quadrant. This week is the Jem’Hadar.
Genetically bred to be warriors, the Jem’Hadar are belligerent and aggressive, trained to seek conflict and achieve victor. They are programmed to see the Founders as gods, and are unable to easily disobey their commands.
Following the Dominion War, a Jem’Hadar could be assigned to a Federation ship as a cultural ambassador. A way for the two factions to exchange cultural ideas. Or the Jem’Hadar could have been an embryonic war orphan raised by Starfleet over its three day childhood. The problem with this is the Jem’Hadar still requires to drug Ketracel-white to function. But, following the war, it’s likely Starfleet could have learned how to replicate the enzyme as a way to motivation defection. As the genetic engineering that teaches Jem’Hadar to revere the Founders is imperfect, it’s also possible to play a rogue Jem’Hadar who betrayed the Dominion. The character would be aggressive and violent, perhaps serving as a mercenary or enforcer.
It’s worth plugging the upcoming Star Trek Online expansion,Victory is Life, which releases in Summer 2018. That includes a mini-campaign where you can also play as a Jem’Hadar, This will likely also give ideas on how to work in a Jem’Hadar character and their mindset.
