Roll a D20 to determine which more mundane event your archaeological survey team encounters during their mission in the Star Trek universe! (FYI, Jason is a real life archeologist, so this comes from a place of truth.)
- Local law enforcement/military requires more “funding” to not stop the dig in order to “check authorizations”
- University sends a new professor who has no idea what’s going on and believes they are in charge.
- Grad students are hung over/ill from local beverages/food/other substances.
- Grad student causes an incident through violation of local taboos.
- Site supplies (food/water) is contaminated.
- Tools stolen by local thieves.
- Retaining wall falls (i.e., a meter-wide piece of ground that is never touched in order to separate parts of the site. Look at the Gobekli Tepe or Karahan Tepe dig for images).
- Local laborer feigns injury or is actually injured (and guess who gets to pay and make other arrangements for them).
- Grant money did not hit the expedition account.
- University made a mistake and the expedition was sent to the wrong site.
- Two expeditions from different universities are working the same site (they can either work together or are just in the way the entire time).
- Combat lines get too close to the dig site for comfort.
- Local accommodations are canceled and/or suddenly raise their prices.
- Site security is drawn away from the dig for some reason (usually emergency) and everyone is nervously paying too much attention to the surroundings than the dig.
- A religious group shows up claiming the site is sacred land (whether it is or not) and demanding the dig stop.
- Grad student “falls in love” with a local (this one can go any multitude of ways, and most of them not good).
- Venomous creature accidentally uncovered and/or decides the dig is a great place for a nap.
- Local domesticated animal falls into dig site (problem comes from getting the animal our and/or compensating the owner).
- Local non-domesticated wildlife gets curious (can be dangerous or not).
- Not finding anything in the dig.
