I’m finally back to Star Trek Adventures after years away.

I’m very excited for this campaign. A friend reached out to me and asked me if I was willing to do a once-a-month campaign for him and other players, and I agreed, but as I reached out to players, I told them that part of the game would be the time between sessions, when the players would be doing research on different Trek-related in-universe things, as well as various scientific breakthroughs their characters are interested in.

One player, for example, wants to be a stellar astrophysicist, so she’ll be researching information about stars, the science behind different phenomena, etc. A week before the sessions, without giving context to create spoilers, I’ll give research topics like, “Go ahead and do some research on The Methuselah Star. Then, in that session, she’ll show up as an expert in the field. Everyone has been super excited about this idea.

I’m also utilizing paper minis from David Okum, and terrain from the One Monk Miniatures forum.

I’ve been using the Character Builder to build the Supporting Cast stats, and populating the ship, USS Icarus (NCC-1431), a Magee-Class science vessel. With 80 crew members aboard, I hope that eventually, all the crew members will be filled out for the whole ship.

We’re planning to play once-a-month, so not at a super high speed, but we’ll be playing for longer than we usually do for my One Ring RPG campaign, in order to make sure we can get through a whole mission in a single session and not feel rushed (you’ve gotta have time for the characters to have their Shakespeare plays and trombone solos!)

So, I think this is going really well. I’ll be unfolding more and more of how I’m running this campaign as the weeks go on. We should be starting sometime in April.

I even made a video for the kickoff to the campaign!

Live long and prosper!

Ok. And I love your homework idea. I went ahead and used an AI processing the wikipedia page to make a Science Officer report on the star for funzies. Couldn’t help myself.

Science Officer’s Report on HD 140283

Captain, HD 140283, also known as the Methuselah Star, is one of the oldest known stars in the galaxy, estimated to be between 12 and 14 billion years old. Located approximately 200 light-years away in the constellation Libra, this metal-poor subgiant provides a unique opportunity for Starfleet to study the early universe.

Its low metal content suggests it formed shortly after the first generation of stars, offering insight into Population II stellar evolution and the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements. Unlike younger stars, its composition preserves evidence of primordial cosmic conditions, making it a living fossil of the universe’s formative period.

HD 140283’s high velocity and blueshifted light indicate a dynamic past, possibly linked to early galactic formation processes. Investigating its motion could refine our understanding of stellar migration and the structure of the Milky Way’s halo. Additionally, its detectable lithium levels challenge existing models of stellar evolution.

Further Starfleet study of this star could improve our models of galactic history, validate theories on the first supernovae, and enhance our ability to detect remnants of Population III stars. Its age constraints may even refine our estimations of the universe’s timeline. I recommend a dedicated observation mission.
