Here is a new 2E Canon Event Milestone! Caution: Spoilers on Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 onward, which covers The Burn, and series that follow in the same approximate timeframe (e.g., Star Trek: Starfleet Academy refers to The Burn).
These are events and repercussions in the established timeline that affect your crew. This often is an improvement or other change that affects your game during specific periods of time (or other timelines or alternate realities your campaign may end up in). You can activate these for use if you are in that timeframe.
One major change is that Canon Event (CE) Milestones have 3 components:
- Traits active during the CE; usually 3, and they are invoked when relevant
- Complication Range indicates what conditions result in a Complication Range increase
- Reconfigurations are special rules active for that period.
Canon Events may overlap, at the option of the gamemaster.
We will be updating past Timeline Milestones into Canon Event Milestones as well as adding new Canon Event Milestones.
Based on the events of Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, the devastating event of the Burn occurred in 3069 and affected the course of galactic history. We won’t go deep into the why of the Burn, its aftermath, and its resolution, but the core of the matter is that a catastrophe with unknown origin had caused refined dilithium across the galaxy to become inert. Since dilithium is used to regulate matter and anti-matter, this sudden destabilization caused anti-matter containment to fail in starships, stations, and planetary dilithium reactors. The ensuing explosions destroyed starships and killed civilians everywhere, throwing civilizations and alliances everywhere into chaos. There was also subspace damage in certain sectors. The Federation and other galactic superpowers fell while criminal syndicates rose in the vacuum they left.
Since this spans a large stretch of time, think of it as a mega-Canon Event. We leave it to the gamemaster to determine more micro-levels of canon (or non-canon) events for themselves, and will add such smaller Canon Events that happen in and around the Burn as inspiration strikes. (Feel free to suggest in the comments what we could cover!)
The Burn (circa 3069-3189)
Traits:
- damaged subspace
- shattered civilizations and isolationism
- dilithium shortage
Complication Range: +1 whenever dealing with trade or interstellar politics during this Canon Event. At the gamemaster’s option, an area with subspace damage also receives +1 to the Complication Range.
Reconfigurations: During this Canon Event, there is widespread scarcity of dilithium and technology amid intrigue and tensions. To represent attention to managing resources, use this optional rule that tracks this in the abstract (rather than detailed bookkeeping). Each starship or station has Resource Support equal to their Scale. At the end of each mission, roll 1d20. If the result is equal to or less than their Scale, reduce Resource Support by 1.
When Resource Support reaches zero, they gain the Traits dire need for resources and Complication Range +2. To restore their Resource Support, they must partake in a mission to replenish, during which they must succeed at an Extended Task of of the gamemaster’s design with a Difficulty of 3 and Resistance 2. Other aspects are up to the gamemaster’s scenario. Depending on the scenario, skills such as negotiation, subterfuge, or salvage may be involved. Success means full Resource Support is restored.
(This Reconfiguration could also be used for campaigns like Star Trek: Voyager, to simulate resource management.)
