Welcome to Ten Forward Fridays, where a new playable species is presented for the Star Trek Adventures roleplaying game, filling in some gaps until official material can be released.
For this month, Ten Forward Fridays is focusing on background species from Star Trek: The Next Generation. This week’s species is the El-Aurian, also known as “Listeners”.
The most famous of the Listeners was Guinan, first seen in The Next Generation episode 2×01 The Child. When she first appeared, Guinan was presented as a mysterious figure with an almost preternatural ability to get people to open up and share their concerns. As the series progressed, it was revealed her people were familiar with both Q and the Borg, and that she had visited the Earth as early as the 1890s. The race was only really named in Star Trek: Generations, when the refugees were identified by that name.
The El-Aurian were never members of the Federation, but because of their long lives and resemblance to humans it’s very possible that an El-Aurian served on a Starfleet vessel during either the Enterprise and The Original Series eras. In 2293, two ships were shown carrying El-Aurian refugees to Earth (Star Trek: Generations) suggest first contact between the Federation and El-Aurians occurred prior to that date. There could easily be other survivors on Earth, and others of the species elsewhere in Federation space.
