Ten Forward Fridays: Edosian

Welcome to Ten Forward Fridays, where a new playable species is presented for the Star Trek Adventures roleplaying game, filling in some gaps until official material can be released.
The theme for January is Star Trek: The Animated Series, a TV show from the ’70s of dubious canonicity. This week is the triple-limbed Edosians.

In the late 2260s, the navigator for the U.S.S. Enterprise was an Edosian named Arex, the only member of his species to appear in a Star Trek series, whose inhuman and non-bipedal appearance was made possible through animation. Beyond the TV cartoon, Arex, like M’Ress, was later featured in comic books and novels set, and was moved forward in time to the 24th Century for a novel series set in that era. Even the name of Arex’s species is uncertain, never having been mentioned on the show. The New Frontier novel series identifies him as a TriexianHowever, an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise mentioned an “Edosian suckerfish, confirming such a planet exists, so this blog is using that name.

Edosians are a unique and interesting race, having a friendly yet inhuman (and inhumanoid) appearance, with the distinct visual of three arms and legs. This extra physicality makes them difficult to present in live action, but would not be a hindrance in a roleplaying game. Despite the people not appearing again, having a character with large speaking role in a half-dozen episodes of The Animated Series makes the species more identifiable than many officially named species. Supposedly, Edosions were not a member race of the Federation during The Original Series, so they would not be overly common in that era. But even a few decades after and the people might be more common in Starfleet.
