Welcome to Starship Sunday, presenting a new spaceframe for the Star Trek Adventures roleplaying game, filling in some gaps until official material can be released.
For January we’re filling in some of the starships that existed between Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and Star Trek The Next Generation, the so-called “Lost Era”. This week is the seldom seen Soyuz-class.
Only a single ship of the class was seen on television: the U.S.S. Bozeman in TNG episode 5×18 Cause and Effect One would hardly be faulted for thinking the Bozeman was a Miranda-class as the two are very similar in design. However, as it features in such a memorable episode, the Soyuz-class warrants a write-up.
With its aggressive looking aft section and official description as a “border cutter” the class might serve a similar purpose to the coast guard: patrolling the borders and keeping the peace. As few ships of the line seem to remain in service by the mid-24th Century, either the class was retired early or suffered heavy losses in the conflicts of the late 23rd and early 24th Century, such as the Federation-Cardassian War.
While not a warship (as the Federation doesn’t make warships) the Soyuz-class would make an excellent vessel for conflict-focused campaigns in the Lost Era. In addition to the aforementioned war with the Cardassians there could be any number of conflicts that could drive storylines, such as the Kzin/ Ferasans, Gorn, Tholians, or the unseen Tzenkethi.
