Official version (as the Aurelian) in the Alpha Quadrant Sourcebook

Welcome to Ten Forward Fridays, where a new playable species is presented for the Star Trek Adventures roleplaying game, filling in some gaps until official material can be released.
For January I’m expanding on a few species from Star Trek: the Animated Series, which are only somewhat canon. This week is the avian Skorr

Two identical canary yellow bird-folk appeared in Star Trek: the Animated Series, the Skor and the Aurelians. (Animation recycling had a large part to do with that.) Given the similarities it’d be easy to combine the two, having Skorr being the species (or a culture) and Auralia the planet, similar to the distinction between Humans and Earthlings.

While the Skorr/ Aurelians were not a major part of Star Trek, they can serve as a template for both an avian humanoid people and a flying species. Flight is something that hasn’t been seen much on television for obvious budgetary reasons, but is not a constraints on RPGs. While flying characters can “break” most campaigns in other RPGs, Star Trek is more flexible owing to the inherent technology of the setting. Flight can just be a trait, like Vulcan super strength; while flight is advantageous, the race doesn’t need to be handicapped to “balance” being able to fly as Star Trek takes place in a setting where everyone can teleport, acquire gear, or disintegrate barriers pretty much at will.

  1. I actually think that it is brilliant that you combined the species! Good job, sir.
