To wrap up January, we’re returning to the largely unexplored seventy-odd year gap between the original crew’s movies and and Star Trek The Next Generation. This week is the Centaur-class.
Seen in three episodes of Deep Space Nine, the Centaur-class is described as an “Excelsior variant”. In universe, this means the ship used Excelsior-class ships components and hull sections that were surplus or salvaged. Really, this just means the class was kitbashed from parts of Excelsior models. Despite have a saucer and nacelles resembling that of an Excelsior vessel, Centaur-class ships were much smaller than Excelsior ships. They likely served as small fast-moving escorts or destroyers, the late-23rd Century equivalent of the Defiant-class. They were not particularly common (only a single ship, the U.S.S. Centaur) was seen on the air, suggesting only a handful were constructed. Which is reasonable as there would only be so many spare parts available.
