The Dauntless-class originally appeared in VOY 4×26: “Hope and Fear”. It was a prototype vessel of a member of Species 116 designed as a trap for the crew of the USS Voyager. Most notably, it was equipped with a Quantum Slipstream Drive, or QSD. This enabled the ship to travel at previously impossible speeds. Voyager‘s exposure to the technology was eventually co-opted by the Starfleet Corps of Engineers and QSD rolled out to the fleet beginning in 2381. As for the Dauntless itself, it was not until 2410 that the ship was officially put into production.
