This mission brief draws inspiration from the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Imaginary Friend” (Season 5, Episode 22). In the episode, young Clara Sutter aboard the USS Enterprise-D befriends an alien entity that takes the form of her imaginary friend, Isabella. Initially appearing harmless, Isabella gradually reveals her true nature, posing a threat to the ship as she explores the concepts of trust and friendship through her interactions with Clara. This mission revisits the story, years later, as Clara, now an officer, reconnects with the entity under mysterious and potentially dangerous circumstances. Players must navigate this emotional and complex situation while balancing diplomacy, science, and the unknown.

MISSION OVERVIEW
The crew of a Federation starship encounters a spatial anomaly near a nebula that has a strong subspace distortion signature. Lieutenant Clara Sutter, now a science officer aboard the ship, identifies the anomaly as similar to the energy pattern associated with an entity from her past—an alien being named Isabella, who once appeared to her as an imaginary friend during her childhood aboard the Enterprise-D. The crew must investigate the anomaly, manage Clara’s personal connection to the entity, and decide how to handle Isabella, who may be more powerful and dangerous than ever before.

Lieutenant Clara Sutter, Science Officer

THE ANOMALY
As the ship approaches the nebula, strange energy fluctuations begin interfering with ship systems. Scans reveal subspace distortions similar to those recorded by the Enterprise-D years ago during Clara’s childhood encounter with Isabella. Clara Sutter, now an officer, requests to be involved in the investigation, revealing her connection to the entity. The crew must manage Clara’s insights and emotional involvement while investigating the anomaly. The characters are tasked with investigating the nature of the anomaly, including potential threats it poses to the ship.

THE ENTITY REVEALED

Clara

As the crew delves deeper into the nebula, the entity Isabella makes contact. She appears in a more evolved form, no longer the child-like figure from Clara’s past, but a more mature and powerful presence. Isabella is resentful of Clara, feeling abandoned, and claims that her species has been watching humanity for years. Isabella issues a challenge to the crew: allow her species to interact freely with the Federation, or face catastrophic consequences. The crew must decide how to handle the growing tension between Clara and Isabella, balancing diplomacy with the need to protect the ship. Isabella’s influence grows, and telepathic disturbances begin affecting more of the crew, creating hallucinations and potential conflict. The characters may attempt to negotiate with Isabella, contain the anomaly, or find another solution before the situation spirals out of control.

CONFRONTING THE ENTITY
Isabella reveals her true motives. Her species is seeking connection, but only if the Federation will never, ever engage in any more wars with different polities. The crew must find a way to communicate with Isabella’s species without causing harm or allowing the entity to exert too much influence over the ship. Clara’s personal connection to Isabella is both an asset and a potential danger, and the players must decide how much to involve her in the resolution of the crisis. The crew must engage in high-stakes diplomacy, scientific problem-solving, or defensive action, depending on their approach to Isabella’s demands.

CONCLUSION
If the crew successfully negotiates with Isabella, they may forge a new form of communication with her species, potentially leading to peaceful cooperation. Alternatively, if the entity’s influence is too dangerous, the crew may have to contain or neutralize the anomaly to prevent further risk. Can this crew promise to keep the Federation out of all future conflicts? How they handle Clara and her connection to Isabella will affect the outcome, influencing the final resolution of the mission.
