In Star Trek Adventures Second Edition, starships each have a Service Record that reflects its life of service. It adds a Trait, and also a Special Rule for the ship. It’s optional: ships may have one service record only, and cannot be swapped out. It is suggested that players work with their GM to create alternative service records as desired.

My campaign is starting with a starship that has not yet seen service, but neither is it a Prototype. What does one do with the Service Record for a starship that is brand new? Well, we are adding three new Service Records for such new starships.

TABULA RASA

The ship is a blank slate – on its shakedown cruise with no history as yet, and the newly-assembled crew is ready to make their own path forward together, wherever their ship may take them.

BRIMMING WITH PROMISE: When a new Supporting Character is first introduced, gain 1 Momentum. Also, the Tabula Rasa Service Record may be swapped out when the GM and the group agree that it has earned a new Service Record based on their adventures and reputation. The Service Records permitted are: Dependable Work Horse, Legendary, Hope Ship, and Survivor of X. The new Service Record is then permanent.

TOP OF THE LINE

This ship is counted amongst the top-of-the-line vessels of this era, but isn’t the first of her class. All the problems with the systems have been worked out since the prototype, and an added special feature makes it exceed the typical expectations of ships in her class.

SUPERLATIVE AMENITY: When the ship is created, choose one additional Starship Talent from the five options below. You may ignore the typical requirements, since this amenity is state-of-the-art. This perk does not count towards the standard maximum for Starship Talents: Automatic Return, Captain’s Yacht, Deluxe Galley, Diplomatic Suites, or Dual Environment. This perk may not be swapped out.

NTH TO BEAR THE NAME ‘X’

Note: Replace Nth with an ordinal number higher than ‘First’, and X with the ship’s name

This ship carries the same name as another legendary ship of the past. Her crew recognizes the import of the name’s legacy, however, and they strive to prove themselves worthy of the name…or escape its stigma, if it’s a name that has gone down in infamy.

HISTORY NEVER FORGETS: When the ship is created, choose a social tool (page 280+: Deception, Evidence, Intimidation, or Negotiation) that reflects the reputation that the ship name carries. When the ship rolls to assist a Persuasion attempt where that social tool applies, the group may spend 1 Momentum to ignore any complications rolled on the attempt.
