Welcome to Starship Sunday, presenting a new spaceframe for the Star Trek Adventures roleplaying game, filling in some gaps until official material can be released.
In October, we’re heading back in time to the 2260s of The Original Series. The idea is to offer some alternatives space frames for people playing in that era but not wanting to command one of the twelve other Constitution-class starships. This week is the Pioneer-class.
The Pioneer-class was created by Cryptic Studios for their video game Star Trek Online for the Agents of Yesterday expansion. This is one of four ships designed for this era, as there were no other canon classes of Starfleet vessels (apart from the Antares-type and ones seen in the background on display screens). Characters in STO playing going through the short 23rd Century Agents of Yesterday story-arc are assigned a Pioneer-class vessel.
The Pioneer-class is a twist on the Constitution-class, with a smaller secondary hull and the nacelles instead connected to the saucer. Smaller than the Constitution-class, vessels of this class might be crewed by less experienced officers, perhaps being their first command. Alternatively, the vessel might be used to train cadets during a shakedown cruise. A Pioneer-class might also be used as an exploratory vessel in a game set prior to 2250, when fewer Constitution-class starships were in service. With the Constitution-class starships busy exploring the galaxy, vessels of this class might be used for all manner of diplomatic missions and first contact situations.
