Reil Anaphis – Cybernetic Officer

Welcome to Tuesdays at Quark’s for the next installment in our January series of technological characters. Today’s character is Reil Anaphis, a Bajoran with alien tech burrowed into his flesh.

Technology

Other characters in this series are either technological in origin or altered in specific ways. Reil is more of a wildcard, both his abilities and his implants are big question marks that can be whatever you like. Like Kovar, Reil also mixes some mysticism with his tech so he can occupy a number of different roles in a story.

Another useful feature of Commander Reil is that he is explicitly assigned to a ship in the Shackleton Expanse, the setting for the living campaign put out by Modiphius. I can’t go into too much of the events of that campaign without spoiling it for people but suffice it to say that there is plenty of strangeness going on in the Expanse and any of it could be connected to the alien artifact that gave Reil his implants.

The writeup for Reil Anaphis is kind of one big plot hook, but here are a few specific ones to get you started.

  • An unexplored system in the Schackleton Expanse holds an alien monolith much like the one that gave Commander Reil his implants in the first place. He becomes obsessed with it, claiming that it is a sign from the Prophets. Others, however, are worried this religious fervor is actually some latent program in the commander’s brain.
  • While attending a ceremony at a Bajoran shrine at Narendra Station, Commander Reil loses consciousness and collapses in a heap. When he is revived, he says that he has had a vision from the Prophets of a danger that threatens Starfleet in the Shackleton Expanse. Normally there would be no proving this but Reil’s cybernetic implants now contain detailed astrometric data of a sector in the Expanse where the threat hides. These details are easy to confirm and are more than Starfleet knew before, but do they really come from the Prophets?
  • Commander Reil joins as a passenger on the Player Character’s ship during a long journey back to Bajor. When their ship is overcome by a debilitating spatial phenomenon, Reil is the only one onboard able to function normally and can help restore the ship’s systems. Questions arise, though, as to why Reil is immune to the effect and why it is operating on a spatial frequency identical to the commander’s implants.
