Ten Forward Fridays: Xindi, Insectoid & Reptilian

Edit
An official version of this species is available in the Beta Quadrant sourcebook.

Welcome to Ten Forward Fridays, where a new playable species is presented for the Star Trek Adventures roleplaying game, filling in some gaps until official material can be released.

Continuing March’s return to the Star Trek: Enterprise era, this week concludes my look at the Xindi. I’m skipping the aquatics because, as water breathing beings without legs, they’re a little trickier to use. If you really need stats for them, another attempt at detailing the  Xindi was done here.

As mentioned last week, the Xindi appeared in Star Trek: Enterprise season 3 in episode 01 The Xindi. The enemies of the season, the Xindi were responsible for a terrorist attack on Earth, mirroring current events at the time (just three years after 9/11). The Xindi were basically split into the good mammalian Xindi (the Primates and Arboreals) and the evil non-mammals (the Insectoids and Reptilians). Not the best division…

Following the Xindi Crisis, the species eventually joined the Federation. As planets need to be united and have a single government to be accepted into the Federation, presumably the Xindi either spread out to their own planets or managed to get past their hatred and join as a group.

While the Xindi-Insectoids were initially incredibly hostile to humans— in part because they revered the Sphere Builders—their short lifespans means that in twenty or thirty years they could entirely reverse their opinion of humanity and the Federation. Insectoid officers might be rare in Starfleet, not because they were unintelligent, but because their short lifespans makes graduating normally from Starfleet Academy problematic. They’d have better success as noncoms serving as chiefs and technicians or specialists given a provisional rank.

The aggressive Reptilians had difficulty letting go of the lie that Earth would attack the Xindi, and would have been the last of the subspecies to accept a place in the Federation and Starfleet. But, eventually this would change as the years passed and subsequent generations were not threatened by humanity. Hostile but natural soldiers quick to follow orders, Xindi-Reptilians would excel as security and in tactical roles. They’re a good alternative for Klingon fans in an era when Klingons don’t work.

  1. Jester, are you going to draw up your own Xindi Aquatic PDF? I have the Xindi PDFs by Tony Pi including the Aquatic, but I was wondering if you were ever going to draw up your own version of the Aquatics since you made your own versions of the other 4 species.

    1. Probably not.
Aquatic species are hard to play, as they’re a challenge to involve in stories. It felt less necessary to have hard stats for a player. And four flavours of Xindi already felt like a lot. I was already worried about making too many new player species and making content just to check-off the boxes. And Tony Pi was already filling the gaps I was missing.
