Welcome to Ten Forward Fridays, where a new playable species is presented for the Star Trek Adventures roleplaying game, filling in some gaps until official material can be released.
This week is the Bolians. A background race that has appeared in most of the recent Star Trek series.
Bolians were introduced early in the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and were named after Cliff Bole, the director of Conspiracy, the episode where one first appeared. In that episode, the Bolian Rixx, was captain of the USS Thomas Paine, suggesting Bolians were not only members of the Federation, but had been long enough for a member to ascend to the captaincy of a still relatively new New Orleans-class starship.
The canon date of first contact between Bolarus and Earth/ the Federation is not mentioned on the show, and no Bolians appeared on The Original Series. An earlier Star Trek roleplaying game place first contact in the 2250s while another gives its admittance in the Federation as 2320. These dates don’t contradict each other and allows Bolians to be present during The Original Series era, perhaps being members of an officer exchange program, contractors, traders, or ambassadors. It’s also possible individual Bolians enrolled in Starfleet prior to Bolarus’ entry into the Federation.
