Featured Starship articles spotlight established starships that you can use as a ship for players for immediate play (such as for a demo or convention game), or as an NPC ship in your campaign. Some are a natural fit with characters from the Featured Crew articles. Only Core Rulebook rules will be used (with perhaps a few special exceptions, such as the spaceframes from the Command Division supplement).
The U.S.S. Thomas Paine is a New Orleans-class starship. In 2364, it was commanded by Captain Rixx, one of Starfleet’s finest. It was one of the ships that met with the Enterprise-D in the TNG episode, “Conspiracy“. I chose this one so that if Captain Rixx is used, this ship would be a logical choice for his command.
In 2367, it participated in a diplomatic mission to Epsilon Ashanti III, and in 2368 it was part of the fleet that blockaded the Klingon-Romulan border during the Klingon Civil War. It was one of the 17 out of 23 ships present selected to be part of the tachyon network. And again in 2369, it was on another diplomatic mission back to Epsilon Ashanti III. It has made one comic book appearance, where Rixx was still in command in 2371.
It seems to have a variety of missions, suggesting Multirole Explorer. Based on its participation in the tachyon network, Secondary Reactors might have helped fuel the tachyon systems. As for Rixx’s caution in the alien conspiracy incident, Electronic Warfare Systems would be something he might have utilized to ensure security. I gave it Renowned to reflect that it is run by one of Starfleet’s finest captains, a reputation that might have been given the entire ship.
