STA Newbie, Part I—Maddox Tackles Star Trek Adventures for the Very First Time!

Hey, ya’ll. This is Michael Dismuke. You know me from Continuing Missions and as a freelance writer for STA. My nephew was given a school project to blog. When he told me about it, I told him I could make him famous (well, among the STA crowd) by inviting him to blog about his experience learning the game for the first time. Yep, you get to join us on this journey. [I might sometimes chime in to give the boy some guidance.] This will be a good training tool to teach him to be a blogger and a Trekkie all in one shot! Make sure to give him some shout-outs and encouragement as he learns why we all love Star Trek and STA!

I am Maddox Johnson. I am currently 14-years-old. I’m the nephew of Michael Dismuke, a graphic novel writer and nerd [I prefer geek—MD] who has tasked me, someone who knows little to nothing about Star Trek, to play the game and blog about my experience.

I first heard about StarTrek around the age of seven when a friend took me to the movie to see Star Trek Beyond.

Star Trek Beyond, my first Trek-perience.

Before the film, I did not have any knowledge [about the franchise] and I didn’t know what to expect. I had watched Star Wars before, every movie to date, and thought Star Trek would be a knock-off of that.

While watching the movie, I remember thinking, where are the lightsabers, and where are the powers? To my surprise, while they have many similar scenes and environments, the two movies were utterly different.

Over the years, I picked up little things about Star Trek, mainly from my esteemed uncle Michael Dismuke. [Stop kissing up, kid. I already promised you a core rulebook—MD] I know so far that the Borg are evil, and Starfleet Command is trying to stop them.

I also know of three species in the franchise—Humans, Vulcans, Benzites, and Klingons. [That equals four, kid. And you mentioned the Borg up top; so that makes five—MD] I also know the departments, which are command, operations, and sciences.

Spock is my favorite character. He is a Vulcan, a human hybrid, and fantastic all-around. One of the best species in Star Trek, in my opinion, has to be the Benzites. With their looks and their language, they are a notable species. The ships, in my opinion, are much more extraordinary in this film than in any other sci-fi film I have seen, my favorite being the USS Enterprise. While writing this blog, I hope to learn more about Star Trek with the guidance of my Favorite Uncle, Michael Dismuke. [Ugh. Enough with the brown nosing; but, honestly, great job for your first blog. Now you can join the rest of us bloggers worrying about how many people ignore you online—MD]

Continuing Mission has done so much to support STA that Modiphius wants to give some love back, and so we are pleased to offer this discount code, CMISSION01, which is a 10% off coupon for the STA Starter Set and usable on both the Modiphius UK site and the Modiphius US site.

  1. Pretty solid for an opening Blog post (though I could do without the extra-snarky commentary).

  2. Great start to your blog! Though it has been about 30 years for me, I still remember first getting into Star Trek at roughly the same age as you. I had no idea who the characters were, what species they were or what any of the technobabble meant. But it was super exciting to learn it all along the way as the whole Star Trek universe was open to me and there was something new to discover every day.

I wish I had the idea to blog about those experiences back then. I’d love to have the opportunity to go back and read my thoughts and opinions as they were forming at the time. So keep it up; I’m sure you’ll find all of your blogs an absolute blast to look back on years from now.
