I had to do my part to support Free RPG Day 2024. Partnering with fellow Captain’s Log writer Josh Allen and his son Greg, Samuel Pfister, Event Coordinator & Social Media Manager at Games of Berkeley, held a table for us to debut Star Trek Adventures 2e!

Games of Berkeley has provided the greater Bay Area with games, toys, activities, gifts, and a lot in between for over 4 decades.

I was thrilled to learn that fellow STA alum Sean Gore, writer of the standalone 21 page PDF adventure “Remnants”, is co-owner of this fine establishment.

I’m pointing at Sean Gore, writer of “Remnants”.

With the STA 2e QuickStart guide in hand (and a stack of extras for newbies), Josh, Greg, and I set up the game choosing Klingon game tiles and minis I pulled from my Borg Cube set. But who would play with us? Drop-ins were welcome, and we were pleased to have Ryan and Harper sit down, choose a character and start in on the adventure.

From left to right: Ryan, Harper, some dork, Greg, and Josh Allen.

To craft the adventure, I used a loose combination of the ship and characters from the QuickStart, a mission brief from the Federation-Klingon War Tactical Campaign, and some imagination to create a Directive wherein the bold crew of the USS Challenger had to rescue a mysterious Federation scientist from an outpost located on a moon just over the Klingon border.

Love using game tiles and minis when I can.

The mission involved clandestinely entering orbit around the asteroid-surrounded moon, avoiding a Klingon Bird-of-Prey, transporting down to the outpost, infiltrating the base through a stench-strewn refuse tube, and battling Klingons, all to rescue the scientist who was revealed to be Agent Daniels of the Department of Temporal Investigations!

Of course, since this mission involved DTI and a Klingon time crystal Daniels was attempting to confiscate when he got captured, this mission never happened. The characters were sworn to secrecy and Daniels returned to the 27th century, time crystal in hand.

The mission went well and the players declared the game fun! Mission accomplished!

Harper played Dr. Voraal. The character mind-melded with a Klingon technician to access their knowledge of the outpost. The rest of the game, Voraal struggled between her Vulcan side and Torga’Al’s Klingon passions. Quite the fun conundrum for Harper’s first STA game.

It brings joy to my heart to see people experience STA for the first time. Each player was gifted a QuickStart guide to whet their appetite to keep playing!

Here’s hoping we made some converts!
